Firefighters responded to a residential fire in San Rafael, California, after smoke was reported coming from a home on Mabry Way. According to officials, neighbors called 911 shortly after 7 p.m. after hearing smoke alarms and seeing smoke coming from the eaves of the single-story residence.
When firefighters arrived, crews encountered heavy smoke coming from the eaves and attic area. Firefighters forced entry into the home and found thick, black smoke coming from the kitchen, where the fire was located.
Crews searched the residence and confirmed that no one was inside. A dog was found in the backyard and was safely cared for while firefighters worked to contain the blaze. The fire was brought under control before it could spread beyond the kitchen.
The fire caused significant damage to the kitchen, while the remainder of the residence sustained moderate to heavy smoke damage. Officials determined that the home was uninhabitable, leaving two occupants temporarily displaced.
The occupants returned while firefighters were still at the scene and were assisted in collecting personal belongings and reuniting with their dog. The American Red Cross provided temporary lodging and other essential assistance to the displaced residents.
No injuries were reported in connection with the fire, and neighboring properties were not damaged, according to officials. The cause of the blaze remained under investigation.
