Authorities were reportedly responding to a shooting-related incident in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill named in reports circulating on October 2, 2026.
However, current reporting reviewed from local and university sources does not independently confirm a new shooting at UNC-Chapel Hill on October 2. Recent UNC-related reporting published October 2 concerns earlier campus safety incidents rather than a newly confirmed shooting.
The university has its own police department, and the Chapel Hill Police Department also serves the surrounding community. Chapel Hill officials specifically direct people to UNC Police for incidents occurring on the university’s Chapel Hill campus.
Details about any possible victims, injuries, arrests, suspects, lockdowns, or the exact location of the reported incident therefore remain unconfirmed. Students, faculty, staff and visitors who are currently on or near campus should follow any official emergency notifications and instructions from law enforcement.
UNC-Chapel Hill has previously experienced a fatal campus shooting. On August 28, 2023, Associate Professor Zijie Yan was fatally shot inside a science building, prompting a campus lockdown. That incident is historical and should not be confused with the current unverified report.
This remains a developing report. Until UNC Police or another authoritative source confirms the incident, information circulating online about a shooting in Chapel Hill should be treated cautiously.
