Grace Detrevarah, a New York-based transgender activist and LGBTQ advocate, is being mourned following reports of her death. At the time of publication, however, a reliable public source independently confirming her death, including the date, location, or circumstances, could not be identified.

Detrevarah was known for her advocacy on behalf of transgender, gender-nonconforming, non-binary and intersex people, particularly those affected by the criminal legal system. Public records identify her as a formerly incarcerated transgender woman who worked with the Osborne Association, where she served in advocacy and reentry-focused roles. She also participated in New York City initiatives addressing the treatment of TGNCNBI people in custody.

Her advocacy included efforts to improve safety, dignity and access to services for transgender people navigating incarceration and reentry. In 2022, Detrevarah was identified as a member of the New York City Task Force on Issues Facing Transgender, Gender Non-Conforming, Non-Binary and Intersex People in Custody. She spoke publicly about the importance of including people directly affected by the criminal justice system in policy discussions and reform efforts.

Detrevarah was also connected to community remembrance and LGBTQ advocacy events. In 2023, records from an LGBTQI reentry working group identified her as an organizer of a Transgender Day of Remembrance observance in Manhattan, highlighting her continued involvement in community advocacy and efforts to honor transgender people affected by violence.

A 2018 oral history preserved by the Digital Transgender Archive also documents Detrevarah’s experiences and perspectives as a Black transgender woman, providing a record of her life and engagement with LGBTQ communities.

As news of her reported passing circulates, friends, colleagues and members of the LGBTQ community may look to additional statements from family, advocacy organizations or other trusted sources for confirmation and further details about her life and legacy.
